Laboratory Skills at Liverpool Science Park

The course will provide students with an opportunity to discover what studying and working in a laboratory is really like, before making the decision to apply for a science degree. Students will follow a structured programme, working with our research scientists in the laboratory each day, to gain experience in laboratory health and safety, experiment design, data analysis and grant/project writing. The course is designed and delivered by scientists from Pfizer, University of Oxford and Public Health England, to provide a fully rounded set of skills essential for all areas of bioscience research. A certificate of attendance will be provided to support work and University applications.

Students can book these as summer schools independently on our website (http://www.biograd.co.uk/summer-schools-chemistry-biology.php), however we would prefer to promote teachers bringing students as part of an organised residential trip (especially for 16-17 year old students).

Students (and teachers) will stay in award winning student accommodation to gain a taste of what life as a student is really like, students will also have the option to participate in a social event during their stay (choice of social events are dependent upon course dates and may require an additional charge). Accommodation comprises of studio apartments, with self-catering facilities in each room and the added option of communal kitchen and dining room, plus movie/games room, wifi, 24-hour gym and concierge service.

Residential costs are  £395 per student (without accommodation)or £595 per student (including accommodation) plus £250 per teacher (to cover food and accommodation). Accommodation costs include a ‘grab and go’ breakfast at VITA student accommodation, plus a buffet lunch at Liverpool Science Park. Students are expected to cater for themselves in the evenings and group dining is highly recommended.

Liverpool Science Park and the student accommodation are both centrally located and within walking distance of Liverpool Lime Street Station. Students will have access to Liverpool museums, cathedrals, theatres, comedy clubs, docks and Liverpool 1 shopping centre as potential social activities during their visit.

We will accept groups of 8-16 students on each residential course so that our scientists can spend time talking with students and answering questions. These residential courses are not available to book online and are only offered as bespoke courses to a small number of schools, therefore course organisers should contact the BioGrad office directly to discuss availability in advance (or with myself if you have availability for a phone call in the coming week). Places can be reserved with a £75 deposit per student, with the balance due 30 days before course commences.
